Mary Elizabeth (Mecklem) Zapsic of Beaver, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Good Samaritan Hospice, Brighton Township.
Born July 1, 1930, in Rochester, she was the daughter of the late J. Arthur and Dorothy Simpson Mecklem. Mary Elizabeth graduated from Rochester High School (class of 1947) and Geneva College. She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught for 35 years in the Midland and Beaver Area School Districts. A member of Park Presbyterian Church in Beaver, she had served as a Sunday School teacher and Elder, and was formerly active with the Park Presbyterian Women. Mary Elizabeth loved life and enjoyed her involvement in many community organizations—Century Club of Beaver, American Association of University Women, Ft. McIntosh Daughters of the American Revolution, AARP, PSEA-Retired, Beaver Valley/West Hills Christian Women’s Club, Literary Circle, and Civil War Round Table. She was a devoted volunteer of the Crimson Line Auxiliary at the former Friendship Ridge, where she logged over 8,000 volunteer hours and served as Past President and Historian.
Mary Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert P. Zapsic, in 2012. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Roxanne and Jack Walker of Brighton Twp., and Ginny and Bill Flick of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; one granddaughter Leslie (John) Walker Ford, Silverthorne, Colorado; two grandsons, Christopher (Becca) Walker, Kenai, Alaska, and Robert Brian Flick, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; her brother, Joseph (Bud) Mecklem of Rochester, and a dear sister-in-law, Sandra Brandenberger of Monaca. Mary Elizabeth counted her two great grandchildren, Lily Elizabeth and Phineas John Ford, among her greatest blessings.
Friends will be received Sunday, October 29, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Noll Funeral Home, 333 Third St., Beaver. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 30, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Park Presbyterian Church in Beaver. Private interment will follow at Beaver Cemetery.
